How to Start Trading on Sparkling in South Africa: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting on Sparkling takes a few minutes and needs only Telegram and some crypto or a bank card. You type what you want, the agent prepares the trade, and nothing happens until you tap Confirm. This guide walks through the five steps from opening the app to your first trade, and explains the risks before you take any.

If you have never bought crypto before, start with our general guide to how to start crypto trading in South Africa, then come back here.

Step 1: Open Sparkling in Telegram and Set Up Your Own Wallet

No Download: Sparkling Opens From a Telegram Link

Sparkling runs as a Telegram mini app, so there is nothing to install. Tap the official Sparkling link and the app opens inside Telegram. Sparkling is not listed in the App Store or Google Play, so any “Sparkling” app you find in a store is not the official one. Web and desktop versions are planned for later.

To start, you need a Telegram account and must be at least 18 years old. Opening an account does not require an ID check.

Connect Your Wallet and Keep Your Keys

Every Sparkling wallet is self-custodial: your balance sits in a wallet that only you control. Sparkling never sees your keys, and they never leave your device. Key storage and transaction signing run on Turnkey infrastructure, and there is no seed phrase to write down.

This means nobody can freeze or move your balance, including Sparkling. It also means responsibility sits with you: if you lose access to your wallet, Sparkling cannot restore it. Never share your keys or login codes with anyone who contacts you claiming to be from Sparkling.

Step 2: Top Up Your Sparkling Balance

Deposit Crypto From Any Network

If you already hold crypto on an exchange such as Luno, VALR or Binance, send it to your Sparkling balance. Sparkling accepts crypto from any network, so USDT on Tron, ETH on Ethereum or USDC on Solana all work. Always check the network before you send: a transfer on the wrong network can be lost.

Top Up With a Bank Card via Wert

If you don’t hold crypto yet, you can top up with a bank card via Wert, an on-ramp provider, where it is supported. Wert converts your card payment into crypto and sends it to your balance. Card top-ups may carry a provider fee, shown before you pay.

Step 3: Learn the “AI Prepares, You Confirm” Workflow

How Your Request Turns Into a Trade Card You Approve in One Tap

Every trade on Sparkling follows the same flow:

  1. You type a request in plain English, such as “swap 100 USDT to BTC” or “show my PnL”.
  2. The agent prepares the trade. It reads the market, picks the venue and route, and sizes the trade to your request.
  3. You see one card with the asset, amount, price, route, Sparkling’s fee and the network fee.
  4. You decide. Tap Confirm to send the trade, or close the card and change your request.
  5. The trade settles on-chain and your balance updates.

The agent cannot send anything on its own: without your tap, nothing is executed. Once you confirm, on-chain trades cannot be reversed, so read the card before you tap.

Step 4: Choose Your First Sparkling Agent

Sparkling has several agents, each built for one kind of trade. Start at the top of this list and move down only when you understand the risks. Availability of individual features varies by jurisdiction.

1. Swap Agent: Swap Any Coin With the Best Route

The simplest first trade. Ask the agent to swap one coin for another, and it finds the route across networks and exchanges, so you don’t need a manual bridge. For example, “swap 20 USDT to BTC” gives you a card with the rate and fees; one tap and the BTC is in your balance.

2. Hold Dollars: Keep Part of Your Balance in USDT or USDC

Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are digital dollars worth about $1 each. Many South Africans hold part of their savings this way. Ask the agent to swap into a stablecoin and your balance stays in dollars until you decide otherwise. Stablecoins are not bank deposits and are not insured; our guide to stablecoins explains how they work.

3. Prediction Agent: Take a Position on Real-World Events

Event markets let you buy contracts on outcomes such as Premier League or AFCON matches, run on Polymarket. Each contract costs between $0 and $1, and its price reflects how likely the market thinks the outcome is. If the outcome happens, the contract pays $1; if not, it pays $0. You can sell before the event ends, and you can lose the full amount you put in.

4. Perpetual Futures Agent: Long or Short With Built-In Risk Limits

Perpetual futures let you trade on a price going up (long) or down (short) without owning the asset. Positions run on Hyperliquid, and the agent keeps each one within built-in risk limits. Leverage lets you open a position larger than your deposit: at 5x, $20 controls a $100 position, and both gains and losses grow five times. If the price moves too far against you, the position is liquidated and you lose your margin. Leave this step until you are comfortable with swaps.

Step 5: Manage Your Risk From the First Trade

Start Small, Check Every Card and Understand Leverage First

The agent prepares trades; it does not make them safe. A few habits keep your risk under control:

  • Start small. Make your first trades with an amount you are prepared to lose entirely.
  • Read every card. Check the asset, amount, price and fees before you tap Confirm.
  • Keep part of your balance in stablecoins. It gives you a dollar base while prices move.
  • Don’t start with leverage. Learn how liquidation works first; our guide to crypto futures explains it in plain words.
  • Keep records. SARS treats crypto gains as taxable, either as income or as capital gains, so note what you buy and sell.

Crypto prices can fall sharply, and nothing on Sparkling is insured. Authorisation of Sparkling by South Africa’s FSCA has not been confirmed.

FAQ

How much do I need to start trading on Sparkling?

You don’t need a large amount. You can start with a small swap of USDT or a fraction of a US stock. The card shows all fees before you confirm, so you can see what a small trade costs.

Do I need prior trading experience to use Sparkling agents?

No. You type what you want in plain English and the agent prepares the trade, so you don’t need to use order books or charts. You still decide on every trade, so it helps to understand the basics, especially before using leverage.

How does Sparkling keep my funds safe during trades?

Your balance sits in a self-custodial wallet that only you control, with keys secured by Turnkey. Sparkling cannot freeze or move your funds, and every trade needs your confirmation. Market and protocol risks remain, and your balance is not insured.

Can the agent make a trade without my confirmation?

No. The agent can only prepare trades. Each one comes to you as a card, and nothing is executed until you tap Confirm.
